ABOUT THE FILM
A closer look.
This short film shows the COLORFULWAY water-based colored thin pavement system being applied on site. Watch the primer, intermediate coating and top-surface coating go down in sequence, forming a 1 mm thick colored overlay on an existing asphalt or concrete surface.
How it works
The system uses a three-layer composite structure: a primer coat that bonds to the substrate, an intermediate coating that provides the main color and flexibility, and a top-surface coating that seals and protects against UV wear. The total finished thickness is only 1 mm, which means no curb or drain adjustments and very little added dead load on bridge decks or parking structures.
Because the material is water-based and cold-applied, there is no hot-mix plant, no fume extraction and no thermal kickback on the job. The cured surface is flexible, skid-resistant and available in green, red, gray and other colors for park greenways, bike lanes, plazas, sidewalks and colored intersection treatments. It addresses the common drawbacks of traditional colored pavement: thick overlay, hot-construction requirement and fast color fading.
Application is done with a squeegee, brush or roller depending on the project size. The primer goes down first and is allowed to tack up, followed by the intermediate coat and then the top surface coat, with each layer cured before the next goes on. The finished overlay opens to light traffic within a few hours and reaches full wear resistance within a day or two, with no curing delays typical of hot-mix colored asphalt.
Because the overlay is only 1 mm and bonded directly to the existing surface, it does not alter curb heights, drainage profiles or vertical clearances. It is suitable for park greenways, residential bike lanes, commercial plazas, sidewalks and colored intersection crosswalks. The water-based binder resists UV fading better than solvent-based paints and can be repaired locally if a section is damaged during later utility work.
